Much has been written about self-esteem. Probably too much. Maintaining a healthy self image is, to a surprisingly large extent, a function of 1. doing the right thing 2. thinking healthy thoughts 3. finding something to do that you're passionate about. And while you're at it, consider the following common-sense tips:

10 Commandments for Maintaining Heightened Self Esteem

1. Do the right thing: If you're misbehaving, how can you possibly hope to feel good about yourself?

2. Watch what you think: If your inner voice is, in reality, your inner critic, you need to learn to think more rationally.

3. Spend time with boosters, not critics: Are your friends putting you down? If so, find new friends.

4. Don't put your day or your life on hold: If you're a chronic procrastinator about large matters or small ones, you'll make yourself miserable.

5. Don't be a perfectionist: Strive for excellence, but never confuse it with perfection.

6. Find something you're passionate about: Become so busy following your passion that you forget to worry about your self-esteem.

7. If you're addicted to something unhealthy, stop; if you can't stop, get help: Addictions, of whatever type, create havoc in your life. And disorder. And grief. And low self esteem.

8. Find a purpose for your life that is larger than you are: When you're dedicated to something or someone besides yourself, you blossom.

9. If you think that you might be suffering from depression, consult a physician: low self esteem may be one manifestation of clinical depression. If you, or someone you trust, thinks that you may be depressed, see a doctor. Depression is treatable, so treat it. Now.

10. Don't worry too much about self-esteem: Instead, worry more about living a life that you're proud of. And think rational thoughts. And find a worthy purpose. And find people whom you care about and who care about you. When you do, your self-esteem will, on most days, tend to take care of itself.
