On October 2, 1959, Rod Serling's classic TV series The Twilight Zone premiered on CBS. The quirky science fiction series was known for its weird subject matter and its surprise endings. Serling, the all-time master of scary television, had this observation about fear. He said, "The worst fear of all is the fear of the unknown." So if you’re facing a fear-provoking situation, don’t close your eyes, open them. When you ignore your problems, or ignore them altogether, you provide the perfect environment for your problems to grow. But when you face reality and take immediate action, you improve your chances for a very happy ending.

Do not build up obstacles in your imagination. Difficulties must be studied and dealt with, but they must not be magnified by fear."
Norman Vincent Peale

"
Never take the counsel of your fears."
Andrew Jackson

"
We are more often frightened than hurt, and we suffer more from imagination than from reality."
Seneca

Denial Is Easy, but It Makes Life Hard

"We are never deceived; we deceive ourselves."
Goethe

"Facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored."
Aldous Huxley

"Men take more pains to mask than to mend."
Ben Franklin

"We lie loudest when we lie to ourselves."
Eric Hoffer

"
The ultimate result of shielding men from the effects of folly is to fill the world with fools."
Herbert Spencer

Face Facts and Get Busy

"Bad news isn't wine. It doesn't improve with age."
Colin Powell

"In times of stress and adversity, it’s always best to keep busy, to plow your anger and your energy into something quite positive."
Lee Iacocca

"Facing it—always facing it—that’s the way to get through."
Joseph Conrad

"Jump into the middle of things, get your hands dirty, fall flat on your face, and then reach for the stars."
Joan L. Curcio
