On
this day in 1940, Eric Hilliard “Rick” Nelson was born in
Teaneck,
New Jersey.
The son of Ozzie and Harriet Nelson, young Ricky became an instant celebrity
when, in 1952, he starred with his parents and brother Dave on the popular
television program The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet. By age 16, Ricky
was recording hit records and by 18, he starred in his first movie. In later
years, Nelson gained acclaim as a as a serious musician in the country-rock
genre. Along with his band and his fiancée, Nelson died in a plane crash on
December 31, 1985. Rick Nelson had the following advice for performers of all
ages and types. He said, “You
can’t do good work if you’re going through the motions. You’ve got to enjoy what
you’re doing.” The
