On
this day in 1862, Henry David Thoreau died. This
New England naturalist and author published just two books during his
lifetime, one of which was his masterpiece, Walden. He also penned the
essay “Civil Disobedience” which subsequently influenced activists such as
Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr. Forty years after his death, Thoreau’s
journals and writings were published in twenty volumes. He once warned, “The cost of a thing is the amount of life that must be exchanged for it.”
And he was right. And for more sage advice, consider the following…
In the
Words of Henry David Thoreau…
“If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams and endeavors
to love the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected
in common hours.”
“When it is time to die, let us not discover that we have never lived.”
“We can never have enough of Nature.”
“A man is rich in proportion to the number of things he can afford to leave
alone.”
Our life is frittered away by detail…simplify, simplify, simplify…seek
simplicity of life and evolution of purpose.
“Success usually comes to those who are too busy to be looking for it.”
Today’s Bible Verse
Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth
corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: but lay up for yourselves
treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves
do not break through nor steal: for where your treasure is, there will your
heart be also.
Matthew 6:19-21 KJV
