On
this day in 1888, Jim Thorpe was born. Thorpe (left) was among the greatest
athletes of the first half of the 20th century. In fact, King Gustav
V of Sweden told Thorpe: "Sir, you are the greatest athlete in the world." Many
agreed. In 1912, Thorpe won both the pentathlon and decathlon at the Olympic
Games. In the same year, he led his Carlisle Indian School football team to the
national collegiate championship. He went on to play both professional football
and professional baseball. In 1950, the press selected Thorpe as the outstanding
athlete of the first half of the 20th Century. He died in 1953.
Today, in honor of the great Jim Thorpe, we examine greatness. Enjoy.
