On
this day in 1941, Joe DiMaggio (1914-1999) began his 56-game hitting streak, a
record that still stands today. Today, DiMaggio is almost as well-remembered for
his marriage to Hollywood’s eternal starlet, Marilyn Monroe (the couple is
pictured here). As a member of the New York Yankees, “Joltin’ Joe” was one the
most popular and successful baseball players in the history of the game. In
1939, 1941, and 1947 he was voted the Most Valuable Player of the American
League. On the baseball diamond, he was the model of consistency. He observed,
“There is always some kid who may be seeing me for the
first time or last time. I owe him my best.” So do we.
