Are you in a position of leadership? Are you a parent, teacher, manager, or coach? Or are you simply interested in motivating yourself? If you answered yes to any of the above questions, consider the following 5 principles:

1. If you want to motivate others, you must be motivated yourself. Your attitude is contagious. Think and behave accordingly.

2. If you want to motivate others, you must create an atmosphere that many people will find motivating. As a leader, one of your greatest challenges is to eliminate as many de-motivating factors as possible (this includes individuals whose chronically negative attitudes or consistent misbehavior serve to dampen the enthusiasm of your organization). Elements of a motivating environment include, but are not limited to: fair working conditions, reasonable compensation, clearly defined goals, encouraging leadership, and the opportunity to succeed in the task at hand.

3. If you want to motivate others for an extended period of time, your goals must be worthy, your plan must be sound, and your communications must be truthful. You can fool most people some of the time, but everybody finds out eventually.

4. You must reward positive behaviors; you must establish clearly-defined negative consequences for negative behaviors. The carrot and the stick still work. Unfortunately, too many leaders seek to use one or the other, but not both.

5. Ultimately, you must accept the fact that lasting motivation is an internally-generated phenomenon. Even if you're a master motivator, you can't motivate everybody. If you are in a position of leadership; your challenge is to create an encouraging, helpful atmosphere. But don't deceive yourself: you cannot force people to do that which they will not do. So don't even try. Instead, you must ensure that those who do the work are rewarded and those who don't are not.
