The acquisition of knowledge should never be restricted to our schools and colleges. In fact, the most important part of any person’s educational experience should occur outside the ivy-covered halls of academia. To be successful in this rapidly changing world, one must make learning a lifetime endeavor.
Mel Tormé, co-composer of “The Christmas Song,” fashioned a six-decade career as one of America’s most
admired popular singers. But, things weren’t always easy for Tormé. In fact, in the late sixties, business was so slow for Mel that he reportedly considered giving up show business altogether and becoming an airline pilot. Instead, he buckled down, kept improving his craft, and eventually rebuilt his career. Mr. Tormé observed, “A career and a life should be a giant learning curve and a work in progress.” And, of course, he was right.
The next time you’re tempted to rest on your laurels, remember the man they called, “The Velvet Fog,” and remember that as long as you’re alive, your life is a work in progress. So why not be like Mel and create a masterpiece?
