On
August 2, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was officially adopted by the
United States Congress (on July 4th of that year, John Hancock and Charles
Thompson had signed draft copies). The document's author, Thomas Jefferson
(third U. S. president, 1801-1809). Jefferson once observed, "Our
happiness does not depend on the condition of life in which chance has placed us
but is always the result of a good conscience, good health, occupation, and
freedom in all just pursuits." Mr. Jefferson, like the following men
and women, was right.
