America's undisputed
hamburger king was Ray Kroc (pictured here, burger in hand,
with golden arches shining and Old Glory blowing proudly in the breeze). Ray was
a 52-year-old mixer salesman when he discovered a small but promising chain of
four restaurants that made great little hamburgers and tasty fries. That little
company was McDonald’s, which Kroc promptly bought. And with Ray’s
leadership and vision, it became the largest restaurant chain on planet earth.
When asked about growth — both corporate and personal — Ray observed, "When
you’re green you’re growing, when you’re ripe you rot." At age
52, Kroc was still very green indeed, and the rest of us should take note. It's
almost never to late to have a productive career, or, for that matter, a happy
childhood. And while we're waiting for our next growth spurt, who wants a large
shake and an order of fries?
