Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald
was born in 1896 in St. Paul, Minnesota. He was the namesake (and second cousin
three times removed) of the man the same Francis Scott Key who
penned The Star Spangled Banner. In 1920, the publication of This Side
of Paradise made the 24-year-old F. Scott Fitzgerald (pictured here) an
instant celebrity. Almost immediately, Fitzgerald (with his new bride Zelda)
embarked upon a hedonistic lifestyle that mirrored the Zeitgeist of the
Roaring Twenties. Alcohol abuse probably limited Fitzgerald’s literary output
and shortened his life. When he died in 1940 (after a largely unsuccessful
tenure as a screenwriter in Hollywood), Fitzgerald may have considered himself a
failure. However by 1950, his work had been "rediscovered," and today,
his most enduring work The Great Gatsby is considered by many to be one
of the classic novels of in the history of 20th century American
literature. Fitzgerald once observed, "Genius is the ability to put into
effect what is in your mind." Certainly he fit that description, and below,
we consider more ideas designed to awaken the creative genius in you.

them."

come back to us with a certain alienated majesty."
