In 1875, Mary McLeod Bethune was born in Mayesville, South Carolina. Her parents were former slaves. Growing up in the most humble of circumstances, few observers would have guessed that Mary would grow up to become a woman who changed the face of American education, but she did. Why? Because she had a dream.

Mary fought hard to earn an education in a world where African American girls were not even expected to read or write. At first, she dreamed of becoming a missionary. But she came to realize that, "Africans in America needed Christ and school just as much as Negroes in Africa. So my life’s work lay not in Africa but in my own country." After teaching school for only five years, she founded the Daytona Normal and Industrial Institute for Negro Girls. Today, that Florida school is known as Bethune-Cookman College.

In the beginning, Mary McLeod Bethune operated on a shoestring, but she never lost sight of her goal. Mary McLeod Bethune, the daughter of former slaves and a woman with few opportunities and countless roadblocks, went on to become an advisor to U. S. presidents, a renowned American educator, and tireless worker for liberty and equality. She dreamed big dreams and then worked diligently to make those dreams come true.

The next time you come face-to-face with the illusion of impossibility, remember that dreams can be the foundation upon which schools—and miracles—are built. So keep believing and keep working. If you face a roadblock, start searching for another way. And if you become discouraged, remember the story of a determined young girl who dreamed of changing her world. She made her dream come true. So can you.

Keep Dreaming . . .

And Keep Working to Make Your Dreams Come True

"Always continue the climb. It is possible for you to do whatever you choose, if you first get to know who you are and are willing to work with a power that is greater than ourselves to do it."
Oprah Winfrey

If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams and endeavors to live the life he has imagined, he will meet a success unexpected in common hours.
Henry David Thoreau

All successful people are big dreamers. They imagine what their future could be, ideal in every respect, and then they work every day toward their distant vision, that goal or purpose.
Brian Tracy

First say to yourself what you would be; then do what you have to do.
Epictetus
